World Diabetes Day is November 14. To have this ailment is hard enough for any individual to deal with. For many patients it's a day-to-day struggle.
What if someone fighting diabetes is confronted by another challenge: hunger. This is tragically the situation for lots of Americans. They look to food banks for help.
Feeding America's hunger study says 33 percent of households that receive food aid use a family member with diabetes. For families with seniors, around 47 percent have someone with diabetes.
If hunger relief programs are funded, we are able to take some in the pressure off needy families. For those with diabetes along with other medical conditions, it can make a difference in getting healthier.
The International Diabetes Federation says simple interventions being a good breakfast are capable of doing wonders for treating or preventing this condition. For poorer families good breakfast foods are harder to get. However, if food banks, food stamps and school breakfast programs can be obtained, everybody can be included in this nutrition plan.
As we head into a fresh year which has a major child nutrition legislation along the way, it's time to focus. Food programs can do so much to offer the needy some help. With enough government and public support we can easily wipe out hunger and improve the discounted diabetic supplies well-being of families and the nation.
