Fly Fishing For Carp On The South Platte River
The sun is setting in shades of rose, reds and yellows over Radner Lake and surrounding hills in Tennessee. Heat sizzles in the air and the promise of a cooler autumn is still days - maybe months - away. When the sluggishness of a hot summer begins to wear weary on one's soul, it's time to go to the place that transforms your being into one of crisp clarity and harmony - into a closeness with the sound of the heavens. Music. And Bobby Long.
In 1878...a "waterspout" or cloudburst of rain was sighted up the south Platte Canyon at around noon. The resulting high waters on the montgomery reservoir south park co slightly damaged a railroad bridge in the city.
Whoever coined that old-school sentiment, "It's not the destination, it's the journey," probably was talking about the Four Corners. At the Navajo Nation Monument, you can practically pull right up to the four-pointed brass marker imbedded in the cement and stick your butt in Arizona while your hands and legs dangle over three other states. Take a picture; kiss somebody across four states.
It's believed the first dogs were brought to the monastery between 1660 and 1670 and used as guard dogs and as pets. Not as big as today's St. Bernard, they had a shorter coat and longer tail. Servants who were sent out to help guide people coming through the pass started taking dogs with them in the mid 1700's. The dogs were useful in clearing paths with their wide chests for people to follow. It was during this time they discovered the St. Bernard dog could easily find people who had been buried in feet of snow with their extraordinary sense of smell and had an ability to predict avalanches. The dogs were also found capable of going out without humans to search for and rescue those needing help. After going through a training program, groups of 2 or 3 dogs began to patrol the Mosquito Pass alone.
In Montgomery Reservoir, MD you can actually put out scrap metal to be picked up for recycling at your curbside, including old bicycles, large household appliances, aluminum lawn chairs and swingsets. You can even put out old lawnmowers!
Neither of us was thrilled with the ideas of making the drive again, but we had no easier option. By the time we got through the pass and out into the desert, we gave a great sigh of relief that we had made it before dark. We didn't notice the clouds until we got to Reno.
In 1995...the second morning in a row of strong winds raged in the foothills and adjacent lower elevations. Winds gusted between 70 and 85 mph in the foothills and 45 to 50 mph on the plains. A tree was blown onto high voltage power lines in a west Denver suburb. The fence that the wire landed on caught fire...but did no damage to the surrounding structures. A southwest Denver man was injured when a wind gust blew him and the front door he was holding off a porch. West winds gusted to 45 mph at Stapleton International Airport. The strongest winds occurred in Georgetown where a gust to 100 mph overturned a pick-up truck camper on I-70. The driver sustained only minor injuries.
