The only safe strategy to know if meat, poultry, and egg dishes are "done" is to make use of a food thermometer. Steps to follow to prepare for any possible weather emergency:

"Power outages can take place at any time of year and it often takes from a number of hours to many days for electricity to become restored to residential areas," said USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Richard Raymond. "Foods kept in freezers and refrigerators can become unsafe in just several hours if bacteria set out to grow if these foods are consumed, people can become very sick."

Store food on shelves that will be safely taken care of of contaminated water in case there is flooding.

Have coolers accessible to keep refrigerator food cold if your power will be out for over four hours. Purchase or make ice cubes and store inside the freezer for use inside refrigerator or in a very cooler. Freeze gel packs ahead of time to use in coolers.
